July 2, 2014: In a sharp contrast to the recent report by International Data Corporation (IDC) which suggests that there was a noted fall of 32.8 per cent in the shipments of smartphones in the first quarter of 2014, Samsung is focusing on launching new models of smartphones and tablets in the country. According to reports Samsung is planning to launch gadgets which support fourth generation telecom technology. This is being done as a part of Samsung’s pursuit of maintaining market leadership in both categories in the Indian market.
Mohammad Asim Warsi, Vice President was quoted as saying to ET, “Our observation is that the Indian tablet market size is growing. The number we see, born out of syndicated research, is upwards of 20% year-on-year.” He further said that the tablet sales of Samsung were in line with the industry growth rate with the 7 inch tablets being the biggest grosser. He spoke this on the sidelines of the launch of the latest Galaxy Tab-S.
The latest Galaxy Tab-S 10.5 inch and 8.4 inch runs on LTE-FDD technology and the new tablets would run on TDD-LTE technology. LTE-FDD and TDD-LTE technology are two different standards used for 4G services. Major telecom operators and handset manufacturers have also started planning their strategies around the launch of 4G services. It is claimed that 4G services would allow download speeds upto 10 times faster than 3G.
