Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, the two market leaders of passenger vehicles, announced a drop in wholesales in December 2021 on Saturday.
Although domestic giants such as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have announced growth, the semiconductor scarcity continues to wreak havoc on production.
Despite a decline in Honda Cars India last month, other manufacturers such as Nissan and Skoda claimed greater sales in December 2021.
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the country’s largest carmaker, reported a 13 percent drop in domestic sales in December 2021, to 1,30,869 units, compared to 1,50,288 units in December 2020.
In a statement, MSI said that a shortage of electronic components during the month had a slight influence on vehicle production. The scarcity predominantly impacted vehicle production for the domestic market
Mini car sales, which include the Alto and S-Presso, plunged 35% to 16,320 units from 24,927 a year ago, according to the firm.
Similarly, sales of compact cars such as the Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, and Dzire fell 11% to 69,345 units in December 2020, compared to 77,641 in December 2020.
Sales of vehicles such as the Brezza, S-Cross, Ertiga, and Vitara grew 5% to 26,982 units from 25,701 the previous month.
In 2020, it delivered 12.14 lakh units.
MSI Senior Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava told PTI that the company is hopeful about business in 2022, citing the company’s pending orders, which total over 2.3 lakh units.
However, there are still unanswered questions about the status of the economy and the semiconductor scarcity, according to Srivastava.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the second-largest player, reported a 26.6 percent reduction in total wholesales to 48,933 units in December 2020, compared to 66,750 units in December 2020.
Domestic dispatches decreased in 2021, but total dispatches increased by 21.6 percent to 6,35,413 units, up from 5,22,542 units in 2020.
Tata Motors, in contrast to the two market leaders, claimed a 50% rise in total PV sales to 35,299 units in December 2021.
Despite manufacturing difficulties caused by the ongoing semiconductor crisis, Tata Motors President (PV Business Unit) Shailesh Chandra stated that the company’s personal vehicle (PV) business growth path continues, with numerous new milestones being achieved during the quarter ended December 2021.
Mahindra & Mahindra, another homegrown company, reported a 10% increase in domestic PV sales this month, to 17,722 units, up from 16,182 units in December 2020.
In December 2021, Nissan Motor India Ltd reported a more than two-fold increase in domestic wholesales for its two brands, Nissan and Datsun, reaching 3,010 units. Despite the obstacles of COVID-19 and semiconductor shortages hurting supplies, Nissan Motor India Ltd MD Rakesh Shrivastava claimed the company has been able to improve sales.
Skoda Auto India also recorded an increase in wholesales in December 2021, from 1,303 units in December 2020 to 3,234 units in December 2021.
