Storytelling is the universal language of a human soul. This year’s International Booker Prize Longlist is a testament to this with three languages – Bulgarian, Catalan and Tamil making it to the list for the first time. In total, the list comprises 11 languages celebrating the “variety and diversity of literary production today”, said French Moroccan novelist and chair of judges Leïla Slimani. Among the many coveted names recognised by the International Booker Prize, Indian author Perumal Murugan joins the prestigious longlist this year. Published in Tamil in 2013, the book was translated in English in 2016 by Anirudhh Vasudevan and is the first Tamil work ever to be longlisted for the prize. A significant milestone for Tamil literature, the book narrates a compelling story of an inter-caste couple who have eloped, setting in motion a series of events that make for a compelling experience.
