The American social networking and microblogging platform, Twitter rolled out its new verification application and a new process for reviewing applications requesting verification. The relaunch intends to give more credibility, transparency, and clarity to the verification process on the platform.
The blue badge in Twitter account helps people to understand the authenticity of accounts that are of great interest to the public. It helps people to distinguish and give more context on who they are having a conversation with, which allows users to have a more informed conversation. Twitter has been working to bring more authenticity and clarity to the verification process of accounts, with a policy that has been shaped up from public feedback.
Twitter as a part of the revised application process, introduced various new guidelines for the verified accounts which would help to encourage healthy conversation for the overall betterment of the Twitter community. Twitter follows the philosophy of leading by example, to tweet others on how they want to be tweeted, and to serve conversations that are considerate, authentic, and respectful. Twitter would remove the blue badge from verified accounts that repeatedly violate the Twitter rules. It also has an automatic process for removing the badge from verified accounts that do not meet up to the updated criteria for verification.
The criteria’s for the verification process include six categories and the user must fit in one of the categories to be eligible for a verified Twitter account. The six categories are Government; Companies, brands, and organizations; news organizations and journalists; entertainment; sports and gaming; and organizers, activists, and other influential individuals. For an account to be considered for verification it must be complete with a profile name, a confirmed email address, profile picture, and a phone number, in addition to the category eligibility criteria. The account should also have consistent adherence to the rules in Twitter and must be active within the last six month
Users can access the verification application directly from the account setting tab in the app. The verification application in India would be available in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Kannada. After receiving a verification application, Twitter would either inform that the verification criteria have not been met or will confirm the verification through email, within a month. A blue badge will automatically be visible once an application is been verified.
