Vistara expects to increase its workforce to 5,000 by the end of the year, as the full-service carrier focuses on increasing capacity utilization, expanding its fleet, and improving overall services.

The airline currently employs roughly 4,000 people.

The airline industry is seeing an uptick in traffic figures after being severely hurt by the coronavirus pandemic, especially the third wave, which drastically impacted air traffic that was on the mend late last year.

In light of this, Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan confessed last week that the airline has fallen short of consumers’ expectations and pledged that actions are being taken to close the “gaps on a war footing.”

“We wanted to make certain that our side of the story was told… What we’ve seen in February is that demand has returned, and people have begun to travel, and I believe that, with cases declining, this will continue to be the trend in the future “In an interview with PTI on Tuesday, Kannan said.

While stating that the airline is pursuing a multi-pronged strategy, he stated that the carrier currently runs more flights than it did before COVID.

“Every day, we have between 220 and 250 departures. Since we’ve gained traction, we need to think about how we’ll keep growing and how we’ll keep the pledges we’ve made as we expand up. It also entails including our employees, partners, etc “He made a point.

After taking into consideration some aircraft that will be returned to lessors, the airline aims to have 70 planes by the end of 2023, up from 50 now.

Before the third coronavirus wave, Vistara, a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines, began hiring for operational posts in October of last year.

“Our current workforce strength is around 4,000… we plan to increase to 5,000 as the year progresses.” I believe we will look at that number towards the end of the year as we take on additional aircraft, deliver them, and boost capacity utilization.

“This will apply to everyone on Vistara’s payroll, but not to outsourced third-party partners like contact centers or ground handling agencies,” Kannan explained

The airline, which began international operations in August 2019, had a fleet of roughly 40 aircraft before the epidemic, which has now grown to 50.

“We have a necessity since we are better utilizing the aircraft. Even though the fleet numbers increased in the last two years, aircraft utilization was lower… therefore there was no need to scale up. That process has now begun and is well underway “People are also being hired for back-office labor, according to the Vistara CEO.

According to data from the DGCA, Vistara carried 4.79 lakh, domestic passengers, in January, accounting for 7.5 percent of the market.

IndiGo carried the most passengers last month, with 35.57 lakh, followed by SpiceJet (6.80 lakh), Air India (6.56 lakh), and Go First (6.56 lakh) (6.35 lakh).
