Based in Lucknow, Woven Traditions is all about thoughtful and meaningful creatives. Gracefully tailored vintage blouses, contemporary kurtis, ‘Uber cool’ & ‘Bohemian’ palazzo pants, old world charm potlis and clutches, the ethereal kota Doria Fabrics with Chikankari and the forever loved white on white Chikankari on some beautiful fabrics. That is ‘Us’ and that is what we try to get better at. Chikankari is indeed a labour of love and the result of painstaking workmanship. It is one of the most traditional embroidery styles from Lucknow and is believed to be introduced by Nur Jehan – Mughal emperor Jahangir’s wife.
The design motifs in Chikankari are predominantly influenced by Mughal architecture. These motifs are similar to the ones seen in Taj Mahal & Agra Fort and Bada Imambara & Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow. The architecture has been a great source of inspiration for artists, writers, craftsmen, musicians and dancers of the city. A conscious effort that they at ‘Woven Traditions’ make is to decommercialise the process of making. Artisans are given sufficient time and resources to continue working in some of the original complicated Chikankari stitches and the intricate Mughal architectural motifs, which had been long abandoned in favour of the quick manufacturing varieties. They at ‘Woven Traditions’ try to keep the originality of this Art intact and keep it just how it started.
