What Is Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC)?

Inflammatory Breast Cancer is a type of breast cancer that accounts for approximately 1-5% of all breast cancer cases. IBC does not typically manifest as a lump or mass. Instead, it causes the breast to become swollen, red, and warm to the touch. This inflammatory reaction occurs due to cancer cells blocking the lymphatic vessels in the breast.

Symptoms of IBC: Redness and swelling, skin changes, warmth, pain, flattening or inversion of the nipple, and rapid changes in the breast are a few symptoms that can be seen in any person suffering from IBC.

Diagnosing IBC can be challenging due to its atypical presentation. It often requires a combination of clinical examination, imaging studies (such as mammograms or ultrasounds), and a biopsy of the affected breast tissue. In some cases, a skin biopsy may also be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment for Inflammatory Breast Cancer typically involves a multidisciplinary approach and may include:

Chemotherapy:

Most IBC cases start with chemotherapy to shrink the tumour and make it more amenable to surgical removal.

Surgery:

After chemotherapy, surgery is often recommended to remove the affected breast tissue, lymph nodes, and any remaining cancer cells.

Radiation Therapy:

Radiation therapy may be used after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Hormone Therapy or Targeted Therapy:

Depending on the specific characteristics of the cancer, hormone therapy or targeted therapy may be part of the treatment plan.

Clinical Trials:

Participation in clinical trials is an option for some IBC patients, offering access to experimental treatments and therapies.

Early detection of Inflammatory Breast Cancer is crucial. Due to its aggressive nature, delayed diagnosis can lead to advanced stages of the disease, reducing treatment options and lowering the chances of survival. Individuals need to be aware of the symptoms and seek prompt medical attention if they notice any unusual changes in their breasts.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer is a rare but aggressive form of breast cancer that requires specialized attention. Understanding its symptoms, seeking an early diagnosis, and pursuing a comprehensive treatment plan can greatly improve the chances of successful outcomes for those affected by this challenging disease. Awareness and education are essential in the fight against IBC, underscoring the importance of regular breast self-examinations and screenings for early detection.
