Work – a phenomenon that has varied over the decades. Today computer systems and software are dominating all the scenarios, rendering our jobs less labor-focused. Work a decade later won’t be the same either. Sensational technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics, in addition to the disruption that came along with COVID-19, are molding the future of work.

Employees across most sectors, even medical practitioners, are working remotely today, attributing to the pandemic. This rapid restructuring of the workforce tremendously accelerated what was underway much before the pandemic.

Transformations within the workplace

Humans and the ways they work have been undergoing massive transformations since evolution. The upsurge of technology- from the invention of computers to digitization – has both reshaped how we work and also where we work from, the nature of the job roles, and the skills required. Some of the evident catalysts of change are as given below:

  • How & Where We Work: Mobiles, almost 15 years back, were merely devices solely intended to make phone calls. Today, smartphones are used by employees as portals to advanced software and data management tools apart from various other uses. With portable devices like laptops and tablets augmented with AI and other digital systems, employees are becoming more distant from office desks. They can now work from anywhere, flexibly, and focus their minds on innovative solutions rather than monotonous mundane tasks.
  • Changing Job Roles: More and more companies are adopting AI for their business functions, thereby causing an increase in demand for job roles that are knowledge-based and cognitive.
  • Demand For New Skills: As workplaces are digitizing their operations, the need for knowledge-intensive tasks is increasing.
  • Automation: By automating tasks and minimizing human errors, AI is taking over mundane repetitive tasks. This is permitting employees a breath of fresh air – to focus on problem-solving and creative tasks.

The Future

The reality of dynamic technology and market changes is growing in prominence. Companies are increasingly prioritizing to improve efficiency, personalization, and flexibility. Contract workers, remote workers, and consultants are becoming significant counterparts of the workforce. The new norm is to form dynamic teams based on task-oriented skills, capable of working with a less centralized and hierarchical structure.
The immense growth of technology is empowering the human workforce and is paving the way to a completely digitized societal future.
