YouTube is the media platform which we use the most in our daily lives. It has been popular among all the generations. Now it is being used for various purposes. But some ties have useless and censor worthy content.
Despite various efforts, some violating videos do make it to the website. So, YouTube has to delete such videos. Recently, it blocked 1.1 million videos in India, the highest in the world. The US was a close second. In the US, 300K videos were taken down. There are various ways by which YouTube blocks content on its website. The violating videos are taken down by various departments. Among them are automated algorithms, trusted flaggers, YouTube’s moderators and other mechanisms. All of these support systems fall under community guidelines.
In India, there is also a grievance redressal department for YouTube. It takes the complaints regarding any new upload on the website. Based on IT Rules 2001, YouTube has removed more than 1 million videos during the quarter until March 2022. This number is a lot more than the official numbers.
Channels are removed if it violates any of the laws. In total, close to 5 million channels have been removed during the quarter ending March 2022. The number of those videos is close to 100 million.
Various kinds of videos are removed, which fall under various categories. The reasons for the removal of those channels include violating content laws. Most of the removed channels hosted content that violated the rules and had misleading content posted on them. Such videos accounted for 90 % of the videos removed. Violent content and child safety related content accounted for 22 % and 25 % of the content.
So it concludes that we need to take caution even while using websites like YouTube. The content provided on such websites is also advantageous. Such websites can be used for educational purposes. Many even use these platforms to learn something new. Entertainment can also be a motive for such websites. Several standup comedians use such platforms to gain more fans. This step helps them in gaining more popularity.
